Volunteerism at America’s Friendliest Airport®

Summer has been busy at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport with vacation travelers filling the terminals. Amid the rush, Teen Navigators were involved with helping passengers find their way and feel supported throughout their journey.

The Teen Navigators are part of the airport’s volunteer program, a cornerstone of guest service at America’s Friendliest Airport^®.

From the Teen Navigators to the Navigators, Navigator Buddies and Navigator Chaplains, these volunteers play a key role in helping Phoenix Sky Harbor deliver a world-class experience. Their dedication, compassion and service help ensure that millions of travelers each year feel welcome from the moment they arrive at Phoenix Sky Harbor.

This summer, Phoenix Sky Harbor welcomed the largest number of Teen Navigator Program participants since the program began six years ago, with more than 50 teens volunteering. Teen Navigators volunteer alongside Navigators, learning customer service, communication and leadership skills while assisting guests throughout the terminals. They help answer questions, offer directions and gain valuable experience during one of the airport’s busiest seasons.

The Navigator volunteer program was launched in November 2000 and has grown into a key part of the airport’s guest service operations. Navigators are the friendly volunteers in purple who welcome travelers, provide directions and help create a smooth experience for everyone visiting the airport.

Navigator Buddies bolster the Navigators presence and spread goodwill through the airport’s therapy dog program. These friendly dogs walk the terminals offering opportunities for passengers to pet and enjoy some quality time with man’s best friend.

Navigator Chaplains provide spiritual care to anyone traveling through or working at Phoenix Sky Harbor. They listen, offer comfort and, when requested, pray with individuals who are seeking support. Many are ordained ministers, though trained laypersons also serve with endorsement from their faith communities.
