This Veterans Day, the French-American Chamber of Commerce – Rocky Mountain Chapter proudly honors Technical Sergeant Erwin C. Powell (1910–2025), a member of what journalist Tom Brokaw called “The Greatest Generation.” His courage, humility, and enduring impact remind us of the profound bonds forged between France and the United States during the fight for freedom.
We extend our sincere gratitude to his son, Nick Powell, for allowing us to share his father’s story and for providing the archival materials and reflections that help bring this remarkable legacy to life.
A Journey Across Continents
Erwin C. Powell served with distinction in the 387th Bomb Squadron during World War II, completing numerous missions that played a vital role in the Allied liberation of France. His service took him from the skies over Europe to airfields across England, including the 391st Bomb Group base near the Village of Matching, where the local community still holds an annual Remembrance Day in honor of the American crews who served there.
His wartime diary captured the tension and routine of life in the air corps—entries noting frightening moments such as “aircraft exploded on runway” and others describing guard duty, kitchen patrol, and long flights under heavy flak. These notes reveal not only the hazards faced by his generation but also the unshakable sense of duty and camaraderie that defined their service.
After the war, Powell returned home safely—sending a simple yet powerful telegram to his parents on June 27, 1945, from Camp Myles Standish, Massachusetts:

“BACK IN GOOD OLD U.S.A. ALL WELL. CAN’T WAIT TO SEE YOU.FURLOUGH SOON. LOVE, ERWIN.”
Just weeks later, on July 14, 1945—Bastille Day, he was honorably discharged at Camp Beale, California. That date—marking France’s national celebration of liberty—feels serendipitous for a man whose service helped secure it.

A Lifelong Bond with France
Nearly eight decades later, Erwin Powell received the French Legion of Honor, the nation’s highest distinction, in recognition of his role in the liberation of France. Upon learning of the award, he responded in his characteristically humble way:
“That was really nice.”

His quiet gratitude reflected the humility of a generation that gave everything and asked for nothing in return.

Remembering the Man and His Meaning
Nick Powell’s moving eulogy at his father’s memorial in October 2025 painted a portrait of a man who “led a charmed life serving in a dangerous position yet survived with barely a scratch,” one who “returned after doing his duty, burnished and mature from trials of adversity.”
Erwin’s legacy—of courage, modesty, and connection—continues to remind us that freedom is both shared and sustained through partnership. His life exemplifies the enduring friendship between France and the United States, and the sacrifices made to preserve that alliance.

With Gratitude
As we pause to honor all who have served, we give special thanks to Technical Sergeant Erwin C. Powell, and to Nick Powell for preserving and sharing his father’s story with the French-American community.
May we continue to remember and celebrate those who built the bridges of freedom and friendship that unite our two nations.
Thank you to Lt. Col. Bob Johnson (USAF, Ret.) for the photos.
